Community Projects

ESG

Environmental Initiatives:

Reforestation & Sustainability

  • Donated indigenous tree seedlings to schools around Kanyika in 2015 and 2024, promoting biodiversity and environmental education by raising environmental awareness among students.

Environmental Monitoring & Control

  • Installed weather-measuring instruments, a dust detection machine, and laboratory water testing equipment at the Kanyika site.
  • These tools help monitor and manage air quality, water contamination safety level, and average weather patterns

Social Contributions:

  • Healthcare:
    • Assisted in completing the Entandweni village clinic and built housing for a health surveillance assistant (2011).
    • Installed a borehole at the clinic and facilitated a A$29,000 grant for solar power, a vaccine fridge, and medical equipment (2012).
  • Education:
    • Donated 100 school desks in 2009 and again in 2024 to Kanyika Community Secondary School, supporting local carpenters in the process.
  • Infrastructure:
    • Graded the gravel road from Chatoloma to Kanyika camp annually (2008–2012).
    • Installed two water pumps in Machinga (2012)—one at a primary school and another for community use.

Governance & Community Engagement:

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Globe has maintained consistent engagement with local stakeholders since 2007.

Transparency & Reporting

  • Regularly holds community meetings and submits project update reports to the Ministry of Mining.

Forward-Looking Development

  • Future plans tied to mine development include access to electricity and a modern business center.
  • These initiatives aim to enhance the quality of life for surrounding communities.

Donating to the Kanyika School

Kanyika School is located in Mzimba district about 2.5 hours’ drive from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.

A public school in the Vazala Education Zone, Kanyika caters to 740 primary students and 160 secondary students with a staggering 350 of these children being orphans.

Globe has a long history with Kanyika School which is located just a short distance from our Kanyika Niobium Project, and continues to provide support where possible.

In 2009, Globe provided the Kanyika Secondary College with 100 desks as prioritised by the community at the time. Building materials were provided to local carpenters who were paid to construct the desks, and thus supporting local businesses.

Installing Water Pumps in the Machinga Area

In October 2012, two water pumps were installed in the Machinga area. One pump was installed at the primary school; the other was installed at Chaphuka to be used by the local community.

The Malawi National Policy of Water dictates the community must take the responsibility to maintain the hand pump and must also be involved in the construction and installation of the hand pump.

The community will be in charge of maintenance, health and safety and management of monthly contributions to buy new parts for the pump.
